A group of friends who started walking for exercise earlier this year have made great strides. Usually the three ladies walk about 4km, four days a week, and as a challenge one suggested that they should walk out to Waterkloof farm one Sunday for breakfast –a distance of about 21km!
After some discussion, the date was set for 11th March, and as an incentive, they decided to raise some money for charity at the same time. “Botter Ossies stap vir Aberdeen” was born, and as they could not decide which of the many charity groups in Aberdeen to raise money for, they decided to let each sponsor choose where their money would go.
The ladies are all well known in the town, and they were amazed at how much sponsorship came in, with only a few days’ notice. Hannelie van der Westhuisen, who runs the Kamdebo Padstal, Umelda van Rensburg from Superstore and the Aberdeen detective office, and Debbie Barnardt, formerly of Aalwynhof and the NGK office, gathered a total of close to R15 000 between them, in less than a week!
The ladies started off at 6am, and experienced a beautiful sunrise at the 3km mark. When they reached the 5km mark, Christelle and Toesie Slabbert refreshed them with coffee, bananas, water and a small chocolate. All went smoothly and about 200m before the 10km mark their Slabbert supporters showed up with some more water. Anrihet Marx was the group’s back-up support and put out water every 2km next to the road. Anrihet and Jan-Hendrik Jordaan of Tuin Kaffee sponsored the water and bananas.
By the time the ladies had completed 15km, the sun was beating down, and they encountered a few strenuous uphills. The last 5km proved to be a battle, both mentally and physically, but with the support of each other, and the knowledge that they were raising money for others, they pushed through and arrived at Waterkloof at about 10:30 to be greeted by Suzaan Lategan with a delicious breakfast.
The causes that will benefit include soup kitchens, churches, animal welfare and the elderly. The walkers would like to thank those who helped on the day, as well as all those who so generously donated towards the Aberdeen charities.
